
Crypto exchanges halt withdrawals during a crash for one of two reasons: an operational bottleneck they can clear in hours, or a funding gap they cannot clear at all.
The public notice reads about the same either way. What separates them is scope, and you can usually read it straight off the announcement.
The hot wallet empties before the exchange does
Every exchange splits customer coins between a hot wallet connected to the internet and cold storage kept offline. The hot wallet funds ordinary daily outflows. Cold storage holds the bulk, and moving anything out of it needs manual signatures from several people.
A crash breaks that ratio in minutes. Withdrawal requests spike while the hot wallet balance sits wherever the treasury team left it the night before.
Once it drains, requests queue. The exchange has to run a cold storage top-up, which means waking key holders across several time zones. That is the ordinary reason a pause lasts hours rather than weeks, and it says nothing about whether your coins exist.
The same hot wallet and cold wallet split that keeps most of the balance away from hackers is what slows it down when everybody leaves at once.
Congestion and compliance holds lengthen the queue
Blockchains do not speed up because you are anxious. Unconfirmed transactions pile into the mempool, fees climb, and a batch signed at a sensible fee ten minutes ago can sit stranded behind newer, better-paying ones.
So some exchanges stop accepting new withdrawal requests rather than broadcast transactions with no predictable confirmation time. That looks like a freeze from the outside, but it is a queue with the door held shut.
Risk teams add delay of their own. Large sudden outflows trip automated review thresholds, and manual checks do not scale to a panic.
The thin order books that let prices gap hard on a quiet weekend leave exchange operations with very little slack at peak demand either.
How to tell an operational pause from a solvency one
The insolvent version looks different. Celsius paused all withdrawals, swaps and transfers between accounts on 12 June 2022, citing extreme market conditions, and never restored them. FTX stopped processing customer withdrawals on 8 November 2022 and filed for Chapter 11 three days later.
Scope is the tell. An operational pause names a specific coin or network and keeps trading and deposits running normally. A solvency pause halts everything at once and describes the cause in market language rather than technical language.
Deposits staying open while withdrawals stay shut is the worst version of that pattern. During a broad market crash every large venue gets accused of insolvency, and most of those accusations turn out to be wrong. The ones that were right shared that asymmetry.
None of it helps once the button is greyed out. The decision that actually matters happens earlier, when you pick how much of your balance sits on a venue you do not control.
How long do exchange withdrawal halts usually last?
There is no standard duration. Pauses caused by a hot wallet refill or a fee-stranded batch tend to clear the same day, because the fix is mechanical. Halts caused by missing customer funds have run for months and ended in bankruptcy court.
Can an exchange halt withdrawals for one coin only?
Yes, and it is the more reassuring case. A single-asset or single-network pause points at one hot wallet, a node that has fallen out of sync, or a scheduled chain upgrade, not at the exchange’s overall funding position.
Does proof of reserves stop this from happening?
No. Proof of reserves shows assets held at one moment in time. Without an audited statement of liabilities beside it, it cannot show whether those assets cover what the exchange owes its customers.
